The Blue Poets is een Duits blues-rock kwartet met een eigen stijl. Hun nummers gaan o.a. over pijn en verlangen. In de openingstrack ‘Angry Man’ komt de maatschappelijke woede aan bod. Het geluid van het klappen in de handen klinkt wat onnatuurlijk. Door het pakkende ritme is stilzitten bijna onmogelijk. Gordon Grey heeft een heerlijk ruw randje op zijn stem. Ondanks dat het opzwepend is, zingt Gordon overtuigend, waardoor de frustratie tot uiting komt.

Zonder dat het voorspelbaar wordt, heeft ook ‘Could Have Lived’ een pakkende start. Er zijn subtiele tempo-en volumewisselingen. Gordon laat prima vocale uithalen horen, maar ook zijn lage ‘pratende’ zinnen zijn goed geplaatst. Natuurlijk is het gitaarwerk van Marcus Deml (o.a. Errorhead) super. Maar de bas van Phil Steen is ook aangenaam aanwezig. Felix Dehmel drumt een heerlijk portie weg, waarbij hij zijn cimbalen lekker raakt.

‘All It Takes’ start met heel rustig gitaarspel, dan volgt er een zwaardere, diepe sound op de snaren., waarbij ook Felix zich laat horen. Gordon zingt vol emotie. Hij zingt duidelijk, de tekst is niet al te ingewikkeld. Zodoende kun je na een paar keer meezingen. Er zijn prachtige wisselingen in tempo en volume. De fantastische gitaarsolo raakt me keer op keer, Marcus weet met zijn snaren de emotie over te brengen. Daar ‘scheurt’ Gordon met emotionele zang doorheen, wat een samenspel! In de zachter gezongen en speelde delen blijft de emotie tastbaar. De lage, groezelige sound is perfect gedoseerd. Deze gave lange track is heel terecht de titeltrack.

‘Crawling’ start klein en meeslepend op gitaar, weer speelt Marcus met bezieling. Doordat bas en drum rustig maar intens bespeeld worden, blijft de emotie bestaan. Zang en muziek blijven een eenheid vormen. De tekst vertelt over het gebrek aan kansen waar sommige groepen mee te maken krijgen. De tempo-en volumewisselingen zijn super. Na een bewogen gespeeld stuk komt het klein gespeeld deel extra binnen. Gordon zingt hartverscheurend. Daarna zijn enkele woorden solo, deze zijn klein gezongen. Beide manieren van zingen zijn intens gebracht. Weer is het einde prachtig.

Hierna is het tijd voor een aantal nummers die wat vrolijker van opzet zijn. De bas biedt tegenwicht in het licht poppy ‘Been Here Too Long’. De opbouw is met couplet-refrein is voorspelbaarder. Ook dit wordt met gevoel gebracht, bovendien zijn hier ook enkele ‘twists and turns’.

‘Mind Your Own Business’ zal live gespeeld zeker een sfeer verhogende werking hebben. Na een paar opzwepende nummers valt de ingetogen sfeer van ‘The Day’’ extra op. Dit laatste nummer blijft klein gespeeld en gezongen. Als de cd afgelopen is, gebruik ik de stilte om alles nog even op mij in te laten werken.

Bij de cd zit een boekje van kwalitatief goed papier. Het bevat mooie foto’s van de bandleden, merkwaardig dat de songteksten niet toegevoegd zijn. Kort gezegd is de indeling op deze cd in drie fases verdeeld. Intens- opzwepend- intens. De middelste groep is natuurlijk wat luchtiger van opzet. De emotie wordt dus vooral in de eerste nummers en in het allerlaatste nummer overgebracht. De één zal deze indeling waarderen, een ander zou wellicht een andere volgorde gekozen hebben. Voor mij zit er eigenlijk maar één nadeel aan dit album. De totale speelduur bedraagt net geen drie kwartier. Van mij hadden er nog wel een paar intens gespeelde nummers op mogen staan.

‘All It Takes‘ starts with very quiet guitar playing, followed by a heavier, deep sound on the strings, in which Felix is also heard. Gordon sings full of emotion. He sings clearly, the lyrics are not too complicated. This way you can sing along after a few times. There are beautiful changes in tempo and volume. The fantastic guitar solo touches me over and over again, Marcus knows how to convey the emotion with his strings. Gordon runs through it with emotional vocals, what an interplay! In the softer sung and played parts the emotion remains tangible. The low, grubby sound is perfectly dosed. This cool long track is quite rightly the title track.

‘Crawling‘ starts small and compelling on guitar, again Marcus plays with passion. Because bass and drums are played quietly but intensely, the emotion remains. Singing and music continue to be an unity. The lyrics tell about the lack of opportunities that some groups have to deal with. The tempo and volume changes are super. After an energetic played part, the small part comes in extra. Gordon sings heartbreakingly. Then a few words are solo, these are sung small. Both ways of singing are intensely performed. Again the end is beautiful.

After this it’s time for a number of songs that are more cheerful. The bass offers a counterbalance in the lightly poppy ‘Been Here Too Long‘. The structure is with couplet-refrain is more predictable. Also this is brought with affection, also here are some ’twists and turns’.

‘Mind Your Own Business‘ will certainly have an atmospheric effect when played live. After a few rousing songs, the subdued atmosphere of ‘The Day‘ stands out even more.
