Laurence Jones is allang geen onbekende bluesrock gitarist meer. Hij heeft meer dan 50.000 albums verkocht. ‘The Truth’ kwam vorig jaar uit, maar nu al is zijn opvolger met de titel ‘Laurence Jones Band’ klaar.

‘Everything’s Gonna Be Allright’ start met pakkend pianospel. Door de eenvoudige en pakkende structuur van het vervolg, kun je al snel meezingen.
De woordeloze achtergrondzang is voorspelbaar toegepast. Maar de stem van Di Reed (backing vocalist bij Rod Stewart) is wel mooi. Het geluid van de muziek is een beetje groezelig, maar dat mag wel. Natuurlijk horen we ook heerlijk gitaarspel, al heeft dat niet de overhand. Als dit nummer live gespeeld wordt, zullen maar weinig mensen stil kunnen blijven staan. En via cd tap je als vanzelf mee met je voet. De zin “Everything’s gonna be all right” wordt een aantal keer herhaald, opnieuw hoor je vrolijk pianospel. Deze openingstrack heeft een leuk einde.

Door het stoere gitaarspel wordt ‘I’m Waiting’ iets steviger van aard, maar het opzwepende blijft. Er zijn leuke veranderingen in het ritme, de ritmesectie vormt een prima basis. De toetsen laten flink van zich horen. De gestapelde zang is ook hier wat voorspelbaar. Tijdens een gaaf stuk gillend gitaarwerk eindigt deze track ik een fade out, jammer.

‘Stay’, is qua muziek en (achtergrond) zang nogal voorspelbaar opgebouwd. Door de clichés kun je vrijwel meteen meezingen met dit vrolijke nummer. Als er één nummer in je hoofd blijft kleven, dan is het ‘Stay’.

In ‘Mistreated’ brengt Laurence de pijn van een verbroken relatie vrij goed tot leven met zijn gitaar. De rust is prachtig ingelast. Daarna zou je nog een opbouw naar een intens gezongen en/of gespeeld deel verwachten, maar track is hierna vrij snel afgelopen. Wat op zich niet verkeerd is hoor!

Het tempo is relaxed in ‘Quite Like You’. De backing vocals zijn mooi laag. Laurence is niet zelfzuchtig, hij is niet constant zelf op de voorgrond te horen. Hij gunt zijn bandleden alle ruimte, waardoor we ook hier, weer heerlijk orgelspel horen. Dan komt Di Reed met haar vrij hoge en heldere stem, mooi naar voren. Dit vormt een prima blend met het geheel.

Het eerste deel van ‘Beautiful Place’ is gevoelig qua zang en muziek. Dit nummer heeft Laurence geschreven voor zijn moeder omdat zij een depressie heeft gehad, waar ze sterker is uitgekomen. Hij zingt de woorden zodanig dat ze vrij makkelijk mee te zingen zijn. De (woordeloze) achtergrondzang vinden sommige misschien te ouderwets of te veel van het goede. Wat je er ook van vindt, de stemmen sluiten wel aan bij de muziek.
Als Laurence ingetogen speelt gaat de band daarin mee. Zij hadden eventueel nog iets kleiner mogen spelen, zodat het gitaarspel van Laurence meer op de voorgrond kwam. Want hij speelt echt fantastisch. Hij heeft een mooie stem, die komt vooral naar voren als hij enkele woorden bijna solo zingt. Dit had gerust langer mogen duren

Wie zijn album ‘The Truth’ goed vindt, zal ook dit album zeker waarderen. Want de twaalf blues rocknummers die op dit nieuwe album staan, hebben over het algemeen ook een poppy basis. Dit viertal vult elkaar goed aan, dat komt de muziek ten goede. De band vormt een team, dat is live goed te zien en te voelen. De enkele nummers die op ‘Laurence Jones Band ‘met een fade out eindigen, die eindigen live natuurlijk veel specialer. In november treedt Laurence Jones met zijn band een aantal keer, verspreid over Nederland, op.

Because of the tough guitar playing ‘I’m Waiting‘ becomes a bit firmer in nature, but the excitement remains. There are some nice changes in the rhythm, the rhythm section forms a fine basis. The first part of ‘Beautiful Place‘ is sensitive in vocals and music. Laurence wrote this song for his mother because she had a depression, where she came out stronger.
