The British guitarist/singer Ben Poole can not be ignored in the blues world. Dutchman Guy Smeets has also been around for a long time. These men have often shared the stage together. There is an enormous musical chemistry between these friends. Last August, when small-scale performances were possible, this duo gave a few acoustic concerts in Café Zaal (De Comm) in Groesbeek (the Netherlands). An album of these appeared on March 26th. The photo on the cover is very natural and unforced. It’s just a pity that the photo is not mirrored, now Ben’s name is above Guy and vice versa. But hey, everyone knows who’s who. There are eight songs on this acoustic album, a few of them are covers.

The album starts very quietly, then you recognize the intro of ‘Let’s go upstairs’. Due to the acoustic guitar playing, Ben’s voice comes out even better. The sound is very well distributed on the headphones. Ben can be heard in the left part of the headphones, and Guy on the right. This is great teamwork, because there are two lead guitarists playing here.
Quite rightly, there is applause during an instrumental piece. These guys complement each other perfectly, so the whole thing is balanced. ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way’ starts with an extended solo by Ben. When Guy joins in, the harmony is preserved. Even though Ben has played this song countless times, it is again sung very convincingly. But Ben and Guy also manage to touch a sensitive chord in the music.

The fast, instrumental piece in ‘Going Up The Country’ (a cover of Canned Heat) is beautifully played, and the sound is also warm and clear here. Well-deserved applause sounds in the middle. During a small played part, Ben changes the lyrics a little, this whisky lover mentions ‘Jack Daniels’. This song ends with a cool extended instrumental piece.

In ‘Guitar Duel’, there is first of all a fantastic interaction between Ben and Guy. When they play together, they also complement each other perfectly. Now and then a vocal or instrumental joke is made. This contributes to an extra pleasant and special listening experience. First, you have to listen to where ‘Medley’ is heading this time. Especially by the text it is clear that it is Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’. This surprising, own version is very good. The transition to ‘Smoke On The Water’ is fantastic. Two super guitarists are playing here, there is a lot of variation in tempo and volume. From ‘Purple Haze’, this medley passes into ‘I’m losing you’. The emotion with which he sings touches me. The smaller part played is sublimely built up to an uptempo piece. And so we are back with ‘Billie Jean’, this medley is superb!

Although this album lasts almost an hour, it ends much too soon. The friendly atmosphere of the concert is very well reflected on ‘Acoustic duo live’. There is a single mistake to be heard, but that is allowed here. Now and then Guy provides a fine addition as a backing vocalist, his contribution is nowhere too much or too predictable. The voices of these men blend beautifully. The guitar parts are equally divided, together Ben and Guy form a top team. With ‘just’ guitar and vocals, these guys have made a magnificent album!

Ben Poole & Guy Smeets – Acoustic duo live

De Britse gitarist/zanger Ben Poole is niet meer weg te denken uit de blues wereld. Ook de Nederlander Guy Smeets is al lang geen onbekende meer. Deze mannen hebben al vaak samen op het podium gestaan. Er is een enorme muzikale chemie tussen deze vrienden. In augustus vorig jaar, toen kleinschalige optredens mogelijk waren, gaf dit tweetal een paar akoestische concerten in Café Zaal (De Comm) in Groesbeek. Hiervan verscheen op 26 maart een album. De foto op de cover is heel natuurlijk en ongedwongen. Alleen jammer dat de foto niet gespiegeld is, nu staat Ben’s naam boven Guy en andersom. Maar ach, iedereen weet wel wie wie is. Op dit akoestische album staan acht nummers, waarvan ook een paar covers.

Het album start heel rustig, dan herken je het intro van ‘Let’s go upstairs’. Door het akoestische gitaarspel komt de stem van Ben nog mooier uit. Het geluid is zeer goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Ben is te horen in het linkerdeel van de koptelefoon, en Guy aan de rechterkant. Dit is fantastisch teamwork, want hier spelen twee leadgitaristen.
Heel terecht is er tijdens een instrumentaal stuk applaus. Deze mannen vullen elkaar perfect aan, waardoor het geheel in evenwicht is. ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way’ begint met een uitgebreide solo van Ben. Als Guy erbij komt blijft de harmonie bewaard. Ook al heeft Ben dit nummer al talloze keren gespeeld, het is weer zeer geloofwaardig gezongen. Maar ook in de muziek weten Ben en Guy een gevoelige snaar te raken. Het snelle, instrumentale stuk in ‘Going Up The Country’ (een cover van Canned Heat) is prachtig gespeeld, bovendien is het geluid ook hier warm en helder van klank. Dik verdiend klinkt er tussentijd applaus. Tijdens een klein gespeeld deel verandert Ben de tekst een beetje, deze whisky liefhebber noemt ‘Jack Daniels’. Dit nummer eindigt met een gaaf uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk.

In ‘Guitar Duel’ is er in eerste instantie een fantastische wisselwerking tussen Ben en Guy. Ook in hun samenspel vullen ze elkaar perfect aan. Af en toe wordt er een vocaal of instrumentaal grapje gemaakt.
Dit draagt bij aan een extra gezellige en bijzondere luisterbeleving. Eerst is het even luisteren waar ‘Medley’ deze keer naar toe gaat. Vooral door de tekst duidelijk dat het ‘Billie Jean’ van Michael Jackson is. Deze verrassende, eigen versie is zeer goed. De transitie naar ‘Smoke On The Water’ verloopt fantastisch. Hier zijn twee super gitaristen aan het spelen, er is veel variatie in tempo en volume. Van ‘Purple Haze’ gaat deze medley over in ‘I’m losing you’. De emotie waarmee hij zingt raakt me. Het kleiner gespeelde deel wordt subliem opgebouwd naar een uptempo stuk. En zo zijn we terug bij ‘Billie Jean’, deze medley zit geweldig in elkaar!

Hoewel dit album bijna een uur duurt, is de cd veel te snel afgelopen. De gemoedelijke sfeer van het concert komt prima tot uiting op ‘Acoustic duo live’. Er is een heel enkel foutje te horen, maar dat mag hier. Af en toe zorgt Guy als backing vocalist voor een prima aanvulling, zijn bijdrage is nergens te veel of te voorspelbaar. De stemmen van deze mannen kleuren mooi bij elkaar. De gitaarpartijen zijn evenredig verdeeld, samen vormen Ben en Guy een topteam. Met ‘alleen maar’ gitaar en zang hebben deze mannen een geweldig album gemaakt!
