Na de plotselinge dood van Riverside’s mede-oprichter Piotr Grudziński in februari 2016, werden alle geplande concerten afgezegd. In september van datzelfde jaar werd het album ‘Eye of the Soundscape’ gelanceerd. Dit was opgedragen aan Piotr, met wie de samenwerking toen al 15 jaar bestond.
Begin vorig jaar ging de band weer op tournee. Maciej Meller is nu hun vaste live gitarist. Maar geen vierde vast bandlid om Piotr te vervangen. Volgens eigen zeggen is het nieuwe album ‘Wasteland’ zwaarder en emotioneler dan de vorige albums, alsof ze aan hun tweede leven begonnen zijn.
‘The Day After’ start met prachtige heldere solozang, direct ben ik geraakt door de stem van Mariusz Duda. Er komt een vleugje vrij sobere muziek bij. Op de zang zit een even lichte echo. De muziek krijgt een mysterieuze sfeer. De enkele noten die Michał Jelonek op zijn viool speelt versterken dit.
De snaren geven het intro van ‘Acid Rain’ meer pit. Toch overheerst het sobere gevoel nog een beetje. Maar dusdanig dat je getriggerd wordt om intens te luisteren. Langzaam verdwijnt de soberheid naar de achtergrond. De muziek bestaat uit een behoorlijk aantal laagjes, deze smelten mooi samen.
Het gitaarspel is super. De balans tussen de overige instrumenten is geweldig. Even is er een licht poppy ritme, de sfeer is wat vrolijker. Ineens is er weer de soberheid, dit blijkt de opbouw te zijn naar een gaaf einde.
De kalme start van ‘Lament’ raakt me meteen. Als de sound van de muziek zwaarder wordt, blijft intensiteit van de muziek bewaard. Nergens is het te heavy of te veel. Dat wordt plotseling afgewisseld met een klein ingetogen gespeeld stuk. Deze wisselwerking is er een aantal keer, niet alleen in de muziek maar ook in de zang. Het aantal laagjes over elkaar is zowel in de lichte als in de zwaardere delen in perfecte harmonie. Bovendien hoor je, ook in de minimalistische delen, steeds nieuwe dingen. Na een wat zwaarder stuk zingt Mariusz een aantal woorden geheel solo, dit kruipt onder mijn huid.
Het sombere vioolspel doet daar, samen met de mysterieuze hoge klanken, nog een schepje bovenop.
Ook in ‘The Struggle For Survival’ is er de wisselwerking tussen lichtere en zwaardere sound. Overal blijft de balans bewaard. Dit verschil is er in ‘River Down Below’ nauwelijks. Maar ook hier vormen zang en muziek een eenheid.
De earcandy blijft bestaan in de titeltrack. De laagjes over elkaar zijn mooi. De details zijn prachtig.
Het is puur genieten van wat onder de toetsen en de snaren vandaan komt. Ook in ‘Wasteland’ is er de verandering van klein gespeeld naar zwaardere sound. Ook de rusten zijn mooi geïntegreerd. Delen van ‘The Struggle For Survival’ lijken hierin terug te komen. Dit zit zó mooi in elkaar.
Tot slot ‘The Night Before’. Deze track bestaat uit zang en/of piano. Dit is prachtig in al zijn eenvoud. Jammer dat de cd al afgelopen is.
‘Wasteland’ is een intens album. Soms is er slechts een vleugje muziek die de zang onderstreept.
Maar iedere noot is raak. Er is een prachtige wisselwerking tussen de lichte, soms minimalistische stukken en de zwaardere sound. In beide zit af en toe wat vioolspel. Zo nu en dan zingt Mariusz (bijna) geheel solo. Steeds weer weet hij mij te raken door de kleur van zijn stem.
Door de toegankelijkheid lijken de tracks vrij eenvoudig in elkaar te zitten, maar ondertussen.
Meerdere tracks lijken met elkaar verbonden te zijn. De eerste paar keer hoor je steeds wat ‘nieuws’. Riverside heeft opnieuw een fantastisch album gemaakt.

According to her own words, the new album ‘Wasteland‘ is heavier and more emotional than the previous albums, as if they had started their second life.
‘The Day After‘ starts with a beautiful clear solo voice, immediately I am touched by the voice of Mariusz Duda. There is a touch of pretty sober music. There is a slight echo on the vocals. The music gets a mysterious atmosphere. The few notes that Michał Jelonek plays on his violin reinforce this.
The strings give the intro of ‘Acid Rain‘ more pizzazz. Yet the sober feeling still dominates a bit. But in such a way that you get triggered to listen intensely. Gradually the austerity disappears into the background. The music consists of quite a number of layers, which blend nicely together.
The guitar playing is super. The balance between the other instruments is great. There is a slight poppy rhythm, the atmosphere is a bit more cheerful. Suddenly there is austerity again, this appears to be the build-up to a cool end.
The calm start of ‘Lament‘ immediately touches me. As the sound of the music becomes heavier, the intensity of the music is preserved. Nowhere is it too heavy or too much. That is suddenly alternated with a small subdued piece. This interaction is there a number of times, not only in music but also in the vocals. The number of layers over each other is in perfect harmony both in the light and in the heavier parts. You also hear new things, even in the minimalist parts. After a rather heavy piece Mariusz sings a number of words completely solo, this creeps under my skin.
The sombre violin play, along with the mysterious high sounds, adds a little extra.
Also in ‘The Struggle For Survival‘ there is the interaction between lighter and heavier sound. The balance is kept everywhere. This difference is hardly there in ‘River Down Below’. But here too, singing and music are a unity.
The earcandy remains in the title track. The layers over each other are beautiful. The details are beautiful.
It is pure enjoyment of what comes from the keys and the strings. Also in ‘Wasteland’ there is the change from small to heavier sound. The rest is nicely integrated. Parts of ‘The Struggle For Survival’ seem to come back to this. This is so beautiful.
Finally, ‘The Night Before‘. This track consists of vocals and / or piano. This is wonderful in all its simplicity. Too bad the CD is already over.
‘Wasteland‘ is an intense album. Sometimes there is only a touch of music that underlines the vocals.
But every note is right. There is a wonderful interaction between the light, sometimes minimalistic pieces and the heavier sound. There is occasional violin playing in both. Every now and then Mariusz sings (almost) completely solo. Time and again he knows how to touch me by the color of his voice.
Because of the accessibility, the tracks seem to be quite easy to put together, but in the meantime.
Several tracks seem to be connected to each other. The first few times you always hear some ‘news’. Riverside has again made a fantastic album.
